Privacy Policy

This policy explains how Authors & Co collects, uses, and protects your personal data.

At Authors & Co, we take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect when you visit our website (https://authorsandco.com), how we use it, and the choices you have. We are committed to handling your information with transparency, care, and respect – the same values we bring to every publishing partnership.

Authors & Co is the data controller responsible for your personal data. If you have any questions about this policy or how we handle your information, please contact us at: hello@authorsandco.com

1. Who We Are
Authors & Co is a UK-based hybrid publishing house founded by Abigail Horne in 2017. We specialise in nonfiction books for founders, leaders, and subject matter experts. Our website address is:

https://authorsandco.com

You may also reach us at a staging address used during site development: https://abi.conscious-consultants.com — this is not our public-facing domain but operates under the same privacy practices.

2. What Data We Collect and Why
We collect personal data in the following ways:

2.1  Comments
When you leave a comment on our blog or website, we collect:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your website URL (if provided)
  • The comment content itself
  • Your IP address and browser user agent string (to assist with spam detection)

Your email address may be used to generate an anonymised identifier (a ‘hash’) that is shared with the Gravatar service to check whether you have a profile picture associated with your email. You can read the Gravatar privacy policy at:

https://automattic.com/privacy/

Once your comment is approved, your profile picture (if you have one via Gravatar) will be publicly visible alongside your comment.

2.2  Media Uploads
If you upload images or files to the website (for example, as part of a guest blog or contributor submission), please be aware of the following:

You should avoid uploading images that contain embedded location data (EXIF GPS data). Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images published on our site. We recommend removing EXIF data from images before uploading.

2.3  Contact Forms & Enquiries
When you submit an enquiry via our contact form or book a call through our scheduling tool (Acuity Scheduling), we collect information you voluntarily provide — such as your name, email address, and the nature of your enquiry. This information is used solely to respond to your enquiry and to discuss potential publishing partnerships.

2.4  Booking a Call
Our ‘Book a Call’ feature is powered by Acuity Scheduling. When you book a call with Abigail, Acuity Scheduling will collect your name, email address, and appointment details. Please refer to Acuity Scheduling’s own privacy policy for details of how they handle your data.

3. Cookies
Our website uses cookies – small text files stored on your device — to improve your experience. Here is a breakdown of the cookies we use:

3.1  Comment Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website URL in cookies. This means you do not have to fill in your details again the next time you comment. These cookies last for one year.

3.2  Login Cookies
If you visit our login page, a temporary cookie will be set to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we set additional cookies to save your login information and screen display preferences:

  • Login cookies last for two days
  • Screen options cookies last for one year
  • If you select ‘Remember Me’, your login will persist for two weeks
  • If you log out, all login cookies are removed immediately

3.3  Article Editing Cookies
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie contains no personal data — it simply records the post ID of the article you last edited. It expires after one day.

3.4  Analytics Cookies
We may use analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to understand how visitors use our site. These tools may set their own cookies to collect anonymised information about page visits, time on site, and referral sources. No personally identifiable information is collected through analytics cookies.

4. Embedded Content from Other Websites
Pages and blog posts on our site may include embedded content — for example, videos, social media posts, booking widgets, or images hosted on third-party platforms.

Embedded content from other websites behaves in exactly the same way as if you had visited those websites directly. Those third-party websites may:

  • Collect data about you
  • Use their own cookies
  • Embed additional third-party tracking
  • Monitor your interaction with the embedded content

If you are logged in to a third-party platform (for example, YouTube or LinkedIn) when you view embedded content from that platform on our site, they may be able to link your interaction with that content to your account on their platform.

We recommend reviewing the privacy policies of any third-party platforms whose content appears on our site, particularly if you are signed in to those platforms while browsing.

5. Who We Share Your Data With
Authors & Co does not sell your personal data to third parties. We share data only where necessary to operate the website or respond to your enquiries:

  • Gravatar (Automattic): for profile picture association with comment email addresses
  • Acuity Scheduling: for booking calls with Abigail Horne
  • Our email provider: to send replies to enquiries
  • WordPress / web hosting provider: to operate and maintain the site

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. This is a standard security measure and is used only for that purpose.

We do not share your personal data with any third parties for marketing purposes without your explicit consent.

6. How Long We Retain Your Data

6.1  Comments
If you leave a comment on our site, the comment and associated metadata (including your name, email, and IP address) are retained indefinitely. This allows us to recognise and approve follow-up comments automatically, without holding them in a moderation queue.

6.2  Registered User Accounts
For users who register on our website, we store the personal information provided in their user profile for as long as they hold an account. All registered users can view, edit, or delete their personal information at any time — except that usernames cannot be changed. Website administrators can also view and edit this information.

6.3  Enquiries and Contact Data
Enquiries submitted through our contact form or via email are retained for as long as necessary to respond to your enquiry and to maintain records of potential or active publishing partnerships. We do not retain this data beyond what is reasonably necessary for business purposes.

7. Your Rights Over Your Data
Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

Right of Access
You have the right to request a copy of the personal data we hold about you. This includes any data you have provided to us directly (such as through a contact form or comment), as well as any data generated through your use of the site.

Right to Erasure
You have the right to request that we delete your personal data. We will fulfil this request unless we are legally obliged to retain certain information for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Right to Rectification
If any of the personal information we hold about you is inaccurate or incomplete, you have the right to request that it be corrected.

Right to Object
You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data in certain circumstances, including where we are using it for direct marketing purposes.

Right to Restrict Processing
In certain circumstances, you may request that we limit how we use your personal data while a dispute or request is being resolved.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at: hello@authorsandco.com

We will respond to all requests within 30 days. There is no charge for exercising your rights, and we will not discriminate against you for doing so.

If you believe we have not handled your data appropriately, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at www.ico.org.uk — the UK’s data protection authority.

8. Where Your Data Is Sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Your data may be processed by services based outside the UK or European Economic Area. Where this occurs, we ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place in accordance with UK data protection law.

Our website is hosted on servers which may be located outside the UK. We take steps to ensure that any international transfers of your data are handled securely and in compliance with applicable data protection legislation.

9. How We Protect Your Data
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data from unauthorised access, disclosure, loss, or destruction. This includes:

  • Keeping our website software and plugins up to date
  • Using HTTPS encryption across the site
  • Limiting access to personal data to those who need it to carry out their role
  • Regularly reviewing our data handling practices

Whilst we take every reasonable precaution, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. If you have concerns about the security of your data, please contact us.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we do, we will update the ‘Last updated’ date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

Continued use of the Authors & Co website following any changes to this policy constitutes your acceptance of those changes.
